Meet your farming family - Dennis, Marie, Sam & Lucy… Together we are the Callans

As a family we run a 3,500 acre beef cattle property located in Braidwood NSW, we are 2nd & 3rd generation farmers - our 4th generation are in training as we speak. Rees Callan, Dennis's father purchased our property in the 1950's after returning from serving in Papa New Guinea & as a member of the light horse battalion in WW2 . Our property was given the name “The Wires” as it was the first property in the Braidwood district to have a wire fence erected around it. Initially Rees ran Hereford cattle & merino & first cross ewes, breeding bulls & selling them to local graziers.

During the 90's Dennis started a family with his wife Marie, a nurse at our local hospital & today they are the proud parents of daughters Sam & Lucy. In 1993 Rees passed away & Dennis took over the family farm. He monitored the ever-changing market trends & continually adapted his processes & genetics to suit those demands. In around 2003 Dennis fully converted the property to 100% beef cattle selling his remaining merino stock when the wool market began to dwindle.

After years of research & tweaking our bloodlines to suit the style animal we wanted to produce we now run a composite line of cattle which utilise the best Angus genetics available in the country.

Our line of cattle are highly sought after by feedlots & abattoirs as they kill out in the top 30% of the MSA beef grading system established by the MLA (Meat & Livestock Australia). These large abattoirs & feedlots make contact with us on a regular basis to see what numbers we have available that will fit within their kill or feeder grids.

The catalyst which led to the establishment of “Me & Moo” was a discussion had between Sam & Dennis in the cattle yards after sending a b-double load of heifers to a feedlot & reviewing the feedback sheets. Sam suggested the possibility of opening up a paddock to plate enterprise as a family & connecting consumers with their producer. We know we have an amazing product , its something we have worked hard on developing over a number of years & we want to share that with other Australian families just like yours instead of supplying big abattoirs with a premium product & watching it get exported overseas to higher paying foreign markets.

As part of our commitment to producing top quality pasture raised beef, unlike any other paddock top plate producer we have come across we hold our MSA producer licence & Grasslands Accreditation.

Grasslands Accreditation is run in conjunction with the “Pasture fed Standard”. This standard focuses on three key areas:

Traceability & Quality System – Our cattle must be lifetime traceable & also Meat Standards Australia (MSA) eligible.

Grass fed – Our cattle must have a lifetime FREE from grain & grain by-products. Our cattle must never be confined for the purpose of intensive feeding on farm & must have free access to graze in open pastures.

Animal Production – Our cattle must be completely FREE from any added hormones or antibiotics.

The MSA Producer license in conjunction with this accreditation ensures all our stock are ethically raised, the cattle have good temperaments, are disease & injury free, it ensures the cattle are processed within 48 hours of arriving at an abattoir & are transported within the guidelines for densities set out in the trucking industry code of practice.
